What is Prince George Equine Rescue?
PGER is a private organization located in Prince George, British Columbia, centered on rehabilitating neglected, abused and unwanted horses. PGER is an alternative to the uncertainty of auction, ensuring horses are placed into approved, loving homes. We are also a certified S.P.C.A. facility for horses.
PGER acquires horses through various ways. Some are given to us when their owners are no longer able to care for them. (ie. changes in their financial situations, a relocation that does not enable them to have horses, the horse is not suited to their level of experience etc.) We understand that there can be several different reasons a person is no longer able to keep their horse(s). We do not judge anyone who surrenders their animals to us. We also purchase horses that would otherwise go for meat at area auctions.
PROCEDURES:
Sometimes we receive an accurate history on a horse from the previous owner. We are then able to provide potential owners with all of that info, plus anything else we discover along the way. Many times we are not so fortunate and have minimal history to go on. In those cases, we work with the horse as if it has had no training. We start from the beginning and go from there! Each new horse is put through a variety of "temperament tests". This enables us to assess each horse's personality and training level. This also helps to eliminate any surprises for new owners.
SAFETY IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE!
Unfortunately many horses come to PGER in desperate need of basic care. They come to us from thin to completely emaciated. Their feet are far too long, coats filthy, full of lice etc. These horses are immediately placed on a healthy diet. They are started on a regular worming program. Vaccinations are administered. Each horse is assessed by our farrier Charlie Stonehouse. They are then trimmed and/or shod accordingly. Any horses in need of veterinary care are seen by Christine Murdoch and her wonderful staff at Murdoch Veterinary Clinic.
ADOPTION POLICIES:
Adoption fees for rescue horses are kept below current market value for a reason. This enables us to place these horses into approved homes quickly and cover the cost of each horse's care. This also keeps spaces available as we don't always know when we will have a horse coming in or how many. Unfortunately we have limited space and funds.
Adopting a rescue horse is not about getting a cheap horse! A lot of these horses come to us with some issue or another. They need time, patience and understanding. A potential owner must be prepared to work with the horse to overcome any behavior issues it may have and also be prepared to meet any additional physical needs.
These horses need loving, caring owners for the long term!
Although we are not always able to perform a property inspection prior to approving an adoption, you can expect to receive an informal interview by phone and in person. Concluding that, you may set up an appointment to come to PGER to view, cuddle, and ride the horse(s) of your choice. You can set up as many appointments as you need to help make your decision. We will do our best to insure that you are making the most suitable match for yourself and for the horse.
When you adopt a horse from PGER you must agree that under no circumstances can the horse be sent to auction for any reason. You will be required to sign a contract agreeing to such.
